NYE 2011 Engagement

WE'RE ENGAGED!!!

Getting engaged on NYE on Waikiki was really special.  Here is how it went down:  I departed the hotel with the rock in my pocket and took Jessica to this classy spot in the Royal Hawaiian right on the beach called Azure.  I almost got caught handing off the ring to the staff but when we sat down she had no idea what was happening.  They said they were bringing her a special starter for NYE of foie gras on a petite filet under a lid filled with Kiawe smoke, except when the smoke cleared there was a beautiful hibiscus flower with my ring inside.  I wish I snapped a picture because it was presented really well.   Anyway, I got down on one knee and asked.  She was speechless but managed to quietly say yes.

After a delicious tasting menu and a bottle of Dom in our private, albeit way overpriced, cabana, we left Azure and partied the year away at Rumfire with Ben and Martha.  There were two DJs spinning and about 1000 people dancing.  We bought Champagne by the bottle and drank it while we watched the fireworks explode and some guy base jump from the top of the hotel.  At ~3am it was still raging but we bailed and ended the night right, i.e. at Denny's.  Definitely my biggest NYE blowout ever.  Not sure how that could be topped for me.

Oahu Adventures

This is the first set of photos from our New Year's trip to Hawaii.

My first trip to HI greatly exceeded expectations. On Oahu, we got engaged, we visited our friends Ben & Martha in Honolulu, hung out on a bunch of beaches, took a surf lesson and kayaked to Mokulual Island from Kailua beach. We ate a ton of delicious stuff, partied a lot, visited the WWII Valor in the Pacific memorial, hiked up Kokohead and saw big wave surfing on the north shore. It was a most excellent time and we were sad to leave. While we live on the west coast, HI will remain at the top of our list of vacation destinations. With so much left still to explore, we could easily justify 4 or 5 more trips back.

Willary Wedding

Yesterday, Jessica and I had the honor of bearing witness to the union of our dear friends, Will Rounsavell and Hillary Rielly. The wedding was beautiful and unique. Due to Seattle's unceasing September-to-June rains, they held it indoors at a really interesting venue - a fancy, classic car broker, Cosmopolitan Motors. The ceremony included their family and close friends. The crafty couple made their own terrarium centerpieces which were each a puzzle guests had to solve to learn to which table they were assigned. A pig was roasted for the special day and a friend of the groom brewed five kegs of beer for the event. The party favor was a custom "Willary Wedding" beer coozie, quite appropriate in light of the groom own substantial coozie collection.

I met Will five years ago in Seattle when I bravely moved into a shared house from a craigslist posting. I made some life long friends there. I am proud to know this guy and very happy to see him married to a truly wonderful woman.

Thanksgiving

I had Thanksgiving with Jessica's families up in Seattle again this year. Here are the pics from her Mom's dinner. I had a great time with her Dad and their family & friends but no pics cause I forgot the camera. I did however, instigate a good game of Settlers of Catan that we unfortunately could not finish. Both meals were delicious and extremely filling (esp. the turkey that Nathan & Steven brined). Great start to the Nov-Jan holiday period!

SF Halloween 2011

Here's another flagrantly late photo bomb: my pics from Halloween this year.

We went out to house parties both nights in a row. Dayday was in town which is always fun. Neither him nor Ben had costumes so Jessica and I furnished some for them. I think they turned out well. Quite fun. Big ups to Jon and to Nick for their party hookups. I don't think I am in any of the pictures but I was dressed as Charlie Sheen.

US Health Care Ripoff!

Would you like to spend an extra $2k on health care per year and live 4 years LESS!  Well now you can!  Thanks to the always wonderfully inefficient And ineffective US Health Care system.  You didn't need that pesky *life* anyway.  The last four years are always the worst! Your grandkids graduations and weddings are so freaking boring you definitely are better off dead.

Are you kidding me?!  We are spending > $2,000 more per year on health care AND living 4 years less than even our extreme wealth (GDP per capita) implies.  Without spending anymore than our level of "richness" would have us spend, we should be living 4 years longer.

Loving those HMOs/PPOs/Pharmaceutical Giants/Medicare Parasites/Etc. right now that furiously lobby against any and all policy proposals that could even fart near their bottom lines.
